The best time to visit Tegenungan

Tegenungan at 7 am and Tegenungan at noon are two different places. Pick the hour first, then the season, and the rest of the day falls into place.

Tegenungan opens at 6:30 am and closes at 6:30 pm, every day of the year except Nyepi. It is one of the busiest waterfalls in Bali, and it sits only 10 to 11 km south of Ubud, so by late morning every tour on the island seems to arrive at once.

The hour you arrive matters more than the month. This guide covers both, plus the one day the whole island shuts and how to put the falls first on a private tour.

The quick answer

Go between 6:30 and 9 am: fewer people, cooler steps and soft light. The worst slot is 11 am to 3 pm, when tour groups pile in. After 4 pm is the second-best window. For the season, April to October gives clearer water and the best odds that staff open the pool; November to March brings a louder, browner river and frequent closures. On Nyepi, 8 March 2027, nothing runs.

What is the best time of day to visit Tegenungan Waterfall?

Between 6:30 and 9 am. The steps are cool, the pool edge is quiet and the light is soft enough for photos without harsh shadows.

The difference between 8 am and noon is huge, and every local guide says so. Here is how the day runs at the falls:

Light matters too. Mid-morning sun sits high over the gorge and flattens everything; early and late you get softer light on the spray. The swings and nests on the way down are run by private vendors who charge their own small fee, and early is when you can use one without a queue behind you. Agree the price before you sit down.

When is Tegenungan Waterfall most crowded?

From about 11 am to 3 pm, every day, and more so at weekends and on public holidays when local families come too.

Before the pandemic the falls drew 700 to 1,000 people a day, according to The Bali Guideline. Numbers are back. Most day tours from Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu leave around 8 am and reach the first stop after 10, so the late-morning wave is built into the timetable.

Guests notice. A 4-star reviewer on the three-waterfall tour in September 2026 loved the falls but found the number of tourists posing for photos off-putting. Another guest on the same tour wrote that the guide helped them "avoid the crowds and see the best waterfalls". On a private tour, that is something you can ask for.

Is late afternoon a good time to visit Tegenungan?

Yes. After 4 pm the crowds thin, the climb is cooler and the light warms up. Aim to be at the top of the steps by 5 pm, since the gate closes at 6:30.

Late afternoon happens to be when most tours get there anyway. The private Ubud tour lists Tegenungan as its last stop, after Tirta Empul, and the three-waterfall day ends there too. If the day runs to plan, you arrive in the calmer window.

If it doesn't, you arrive in the dark. One guest who added snorkelling to the waterfall tour started at 9:30 and reached the third waterfall after nightfall; they wrote that an 8 am start would have been better. A sweaty climb of about 200 steps at the end of a 10-hour day is the other price. If Tegenungan is the stop you care most about, move it to the morning.

What is the best month to visit Tegenungan Waterfall?

April to October, Bali's dry season. The water runs clearer and staff open the pool far more often. November to March is the rainy season, with brown water and frequent closures.

A swim is never in the price, in any month: staff at the pool open or close the water on the day. Our guide to swimming at Tegenungan explains how that call gets made.

Is Tegenungan worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes, if you come for the falls rather than a swim. From November to March the drop is louder and wider, but the water is often brown, the steps are slippery and the pool is frequently closed.

After upstream rain the Petanu turns the colour of milky coffee and the spray reaches further up the gorge. Some people prefer it that way: Tegenungan is at its most dramatic in the wet months. The roughly 200 concrete steps get wet and mossy, so take the handrail and wear shoes with grip. A downpour can also close the pool edge while you are there.

Plan the morning visit anyway and keep the afternoon loose. Our rainy season post tracks which waterfalls are open this season.

Is Tegenungan Waterfall open on Nyepi?

No. On Nyepi, Bali's day of silence, the waterfall is closed and so is everything else. In 2027 that is 8 March, from 6 am until 6 am the next day.

On Nyepi nobody may travel, work or go out; the airport closes, and tours do not run. Hotels keep guests inside with the lights low. The evening before brings the ogoh-ogoh parades through every village, a loud, colourful night worth staying up for.

Book Tegenungan for 7 or 9 March instead. Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before, so a booking made too close to Nyepi costs nothing to move. Our Nyepi 2027 post covers the day in detail.

A full day with a car and driver, 10 to 11 hours, parking included: put Tegenungan first and beat the crowds.

How do you make Tegenungan the first stop on a private tour?

Ask for it. Every tour on this site is private, so the order is yours: send the operator a message after booking asking for an early pickup and Tegenungan first.

The timing works neatly. The falls open at 6:30 am and the Sacred Monkey Forest only at 9 am, so a 7 am pickup in Ubud puts you on the steps by about 7:30, and back at the car in time for the macaques. From Seminyak the falls are about 25 km, an hour in light traffic, so leave around 6:30. Tirta Empul opens at about 8 am, which makes it a good second stop in the other direction.

  • The private Ubud tour: the listing order ends at Tegenungan; ask the driver-guide to reverse it.
  • With a private driver: no fixed route at all, 10 to 11 hours, extra hours USD 5 each. Tegenungan is not named in the listing, so tell the driver.
  • From Kuta or Nusa Dua: guests report at least an hour each way in traffic. An early start pays off twice.

Can you combine Tegenungan with Tukad Cepung's light rays?

Yes, with an early start. Tukad Cepung's light shafts appear roughly 9 to 11 am on sunny mornings, so do Tegenungan at opening and drive east, or see Tukad Cepung first and Tegenungan after 4 pm.

Tukad Cepung sits in Bangli regency, 45 to 60 minutes east of Ubud, and the drive from Tegenungan takes roughly an hour. The rays need direct sun and peak around 10 am; a queue forms at the lit rock from about 9:30, says The Bali Guideline. Two plans work:

  • Tegenungan first: on the steps at 6:30, back in the car by 7:45, at Tukad Cepung for the rays. Tight but doable.
  • Tukad Cepung first: rays in the morning, Tibumana or lunch in between, Tegenungan in the calmer late afternoon. The three-waterfall day already runs in this order.

Dry-season mornings give the best odds of sun. From December to February Tukad Cepung often closes when the gorge floods. More on the other falls in our waterfall tour guide.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Tegenungan Waterfall open?

Daily from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. It closes on Nyepi, which falls on 8 March in 2027.

How long do you need at Tegenungan Waterfall?

About an hour: 10 minutes down the steps, time at the pool, and a slower climb back. Most tours give 60 minutes; some give 30 or 45.

Is Tegenungan better in the morning or the afternoon?

The morning, before 9 am, when it is quiet and cool. After 4 pm is the next best slot. Avoid 11 am to 3 pm.

Can you swim at Tegenungan early in the morning?

Only if staff have opened the pool that day. Arriving early does not change their call, which depends on the current and recent rain.
