Tour, Grab or driver?

You don't need a tour to see Tegenungan. Grab will drop you at the gate. The trouble starts an hour later, at the top of 200 steps, when you want a ride home.

Tegenungan sits in Kemenuh, 10 to 11 km south of Ubud: 25 to 40 minutes by road, and about an hour from Seminyak or Kuta in traffic. It is one of the easiest big waterfalls in Bali to reach on your own.

The choice comes down to three things: how you get back, what else you want to see that day, and how many of you split the car. Below, every option with its real cost and its catch.

The quick answer

For Tegenungan alone from Ubud, a scooter (IDR 50,000 a day, licence and helmet required) or a car with a waiting deal (about IDR 150,000 return) is cheapest. Grab and Gojek drop you at the gate, but app pickups there are unreliable. For a full day with the Monkey Forest, rice terraces and temples, a day driver from $32 or a private tour from $38 per person makes more sense, especially for two or more.

Do you need a tour to visit Tegenungan Waterfall?

No. The waterfall is 25 to 40 minutes from Ubud, and you buy the IDR 30,000 ticket at the gate. A tour adds a waiting car, hotel pickup and the other stops.

There is no booking, no timed entry and no guide required. Plenty of people turn up by scooter or Grab. What a tour or driver solves is logistics: a car waiting while you climb down and back, and a plan for the rest of the day. Tegenungan rarely fills a day on its own; most visitors spend about an hour there.

Our take: alone, from Ubud, for the waterfall only? Go independently. Coming from the south coast, or adding the Monkey Forest, Tegallalang and Tirta Empul? Get a car for the day.

Can you take Grab or Gojek to Tegenungan Waterfall?

Yes, both drop you at the main entrance. The fan site tegenungan-waterfall.com puts a car from Denpasar at about IDR 200,000, with surge pricing in rain and rush hour.

From Ubud the ride is short, 25 to 40 minutes. From Seminyak or Kuta, allow an hour each way, and more on a bad day. A guest on the three-waterfall day put it plainly: "Please note if coming from Kuta the drive there is at least an hour due to traffic both ways." From Canggu, Bali Holiday Secrets says 1 to 1.5 hours.

There is no direct public transport. The Trans Metro Dewata bus gets you as far as Sakah in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and then you need a local ojek. Not worth it for a waterfall you will see in an hour.

Why is getting back from Tegenungan the problem?

Because app pickups at the waterfall are unreliable. The Bali Guideline says return rides are less certain, and the fan site says local transport groups restrict app pickups there.

You can open Grab at the top of the steps, sweaty and tired, and wait a long time. Or be pointed to a local driver at a local price.

The fix is simple. Before your drop-off driver leaves, agree a waiting deal: a fixed price to wait an hour and take you back. The fan site quotes about IDR 150,000 for a return trip from central Ubud with waiting. Agree it in rupiah, and pay at the end.

No haggling at the top of the steps: your own car and driver-guide wait at every stop.

Can you ride a scooter to Tegenungan?

Yes, if you hold a valid licence for it and wear a helmet. A scooter rents for about IDR 50,000 a day in Ubud, and the ride is 20 to 30 minutes.

From Ubud you head east along Jalan Raya Ubud, then turn south towards Kemenuh. Scooter parking at the entrance is about IDR 5,000. It is the cheapest way there and the most flexible: you can arrive at 6:30 am, ahead of the tour groups.

The rules are not a formality. Bali's do's and don'ts for tourists, reiterated by the governor in May 2026, say you drive only with a valid licence and a helmet; for foreign visitors that means an international driving permit next to your home licence. Violations can lead to deportation. Rainy-season afternoons turn the roads slick, and Ubud traffic is heavy. If you don't ride at home, Bali is a bad place to learn.

Is a private driver for the day worth it?

Yes, for a full day with several stops. The private driver listing starts at $32 per person for 10 to 11 hours with car, parking and water; you pay the gates.

The private driver listing from Rr Bali Tours has no fixed route. It picks up in Sanur, Ubud, Kuta and Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Benoa and Denpasar, and extra hours cost USD 5 each. Tegenungan is not named in the listing, so add it yourself, and put it first: before 9 am it is far quieter than at 11.

Guests rate the drivers for exactly the thing Grab can't promise. One wrote: "He was always ready and waiting for us after shopping, which made everything so easy". Another: "He even added an extra hour so we could enjoy each place". Entry fees are not included, so carry about IDR 260,000 to 275,000 per adult for the four classic Ubud gates.

What does a private tour add over a driver?

A planned route, a driver-guide who explains the stops and, on the inclusive options, prepaid gates. You give up some freedom over the order and timing.

Every tour on this site is private: only your group in the car. The differences are in what they pay for:

  • The private Ubud tour: from $38 on Transport Only, with an hour at Tegenungan plus Batuan, the Monkey Forest, Tegallalang, lunch at d'Alas and Tirta Empul. The All-Inclusive option adds entry fees, lunch and the Ubud Jungle Swing.
  • The jungle swing day: from $59 with every gate and the swing paid; 45 minutes at Tegenungan.
  • The three-waterfall day: from $53 for Tukad Cepung, Tibumana and Tegenungan, fees and lunch included.
  • The budget Ubud day: from $24 on Transport Only, with Goa Gajah added to the usual stops.
  • The custom Ubud day: from $40 for your own route, with entry fees and parking on you.

Hold fixed itineraries to their word. One guest on the four-waterfall day was taken to Ulu Petanu instead of Tegenungan. Confirm the stop with the driver at pickup.

The Monkey Forest is on most Ubud tours. Its gate, IDR 130,000, is the dearest of the day.

How much does each option cost for one and for two people?

For Tegenungan alone, a scooter or a car with waiting from Ubud costs about IDR 85,000 to 220,000. A full day with a driver or tour starts around $49 for one person once you add the gates.

Rough totals with the 2026 gate fees and an exchange rate of about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 per dollar. Tour prices are from-prices for the largest group; a couple pays more per head.

The car options split the fare: two people pay barely more than one. The tours charge per person. The Bali levy of IDR 150,000 per person sits outside all of these. Full gate list in the entrance fee guide.

Which should you pick: tour, Grab or driver?

Scooter or a car with waiting for Tegenungan alone from Ubud; a day driver for your own route; a private tour for the classic loop with hotel pickup from the south.

  • Staying in Ubud, waterfall only: scooter if you are licensed, otherwise a car with a waiting deal. Go at opening time.
  • Staying on the south coast: book a car for the day. Two hours of round trip for one hour at a waterfall makes no sense alone, and the return Grab is a gamble.
  • You know what you want to see: the private driver, with Tegenungan first.
  • First time in Bali, want it handled: the private Ubud tour, rated 5.0 by more than 17,000 guests.
  • Waterfalls are the point: the three-waterfall day, which covers the gates and lunch.

Whichever you choose, go early. Before 9 am Tegenungan is a different place from the 11 am crush.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grab cheaper than a tour to Tegenungan?

For the waterfall alone, yes, by a lot. For a full day with four or five stops, a day driver or private tour costs about the same as a string of app rides and removes the return-ride problem.

Will a Grab driver wait for me at Tegenungan?

Only if you agree it. Ask your drop-off driver for a fixed price to wait about an hour and drive you back, and settle it in rupiah before they leave.

Can I book a driver just for Tegenungan?

Yes. Local drivers in Ubud do a return trip with waiting for about IDR 150,000. The private driver listing on this site is a full 10 to 11-hour day.

Do I need an international driving permit to ride a scooter in Bali?

Yes. Bali's rules for tourists require a valid licence and a helmet, and riding without them can lead to deportation.
