Nyepi 2027 and your Bali tours

For 24 hours the whole island stops: no flights, no traffic, no tours. Nyepi is one of the strangest and best days to be in Bali, as long as your plans fit around it.

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu new year, the first day of Saka year 1949. In 2027 it falls on Monday 8 March, the date set in Indonesia's official 2027 holiday decree. From 6 am that day to 6 am on Tuesday 9 March, the island goes silent.

Tegenungan, the Monkey Forest and every other sight close, and no tour runs. Here is what happens before, during and after, and how to arrange your days.

The quick answer

Nyepi 2027 is Monday 8 March, from 6 am to 6 am on 9 March. The airport closes, ports shut from the afternoon before, and everyone, tourists included, stays in their accommodation. The ogoh-ogoh parades run on the evening of Sunday 7 March. Book tours on 5 or 6 March or from 9 March, and keep 7 March to a short morning trip.

When is Nyepi 2027 in Bali?

Monday 8 March 2027. The silence runs for 24 hours, from 6 am on 8 March to 6 am on 9 March.

The date comes from the joint ministerial decree on 2027 public holidays, which lists "Senin, 8 Maret 2027: Hari Suci Nyepi (Tahun Baru Saka 1949)". Some calendars online still show 9 March; go with the decree. Two days later, on 10 and 11 March, comes Idulfitri, the end of Ramadan, so the whole week is busy with travel across Indonesia.

What closes in Bali on Nyepi?

Everything that moves or sells: the airport, the ports, the roads, shops, restaurants and every attraction, Tegenungan and the Monkey Forest included.

Ngurah Rai airport closes for the full 24 hours. In 2026 it shut from 6 am and flights resumed around 9 am the next morning, according to The Bali Sun. Ports and fast boats stop the afternoon before; in 2026 the harbours closed at 5 pm on the eve and the last boats to the Gilis left at midday.

Recent years also brought a 24-hour cut to mobile internet and broadcasting, and ATMs switched off from midday on the eve. Get cash on Saturday 6 March. Hospitals, police and fire services keep working.

What do tourists have to do on Nyepi?

Stay inside your hotel or villa for the 24 hours, keep lights low and noise down, and do not go onto the street or the beach.

The day follows four rules called Catur Brata Penyepian: no fire or lights, no work, no travel and no entertainment. Hotels stay open for their guests and serve meals, usually with curtains drawn after dark. Pecalang, the village security guards, patrol the lanes to keep it that way; The Bali Sun has reported fines of about IDR 1 million for people caught outside.

Pick a place with a garden or pool and stock up on snacks and a book. The night sky, with no light pollution across the island, is the best you will see in Bali.

Can you watch the ogoh-ogoh parades the night before?

Yes. On the evening of Sunday 7 March, villages parade huge demon figures through the streets, then burn or destroy them to drive out bad spirits.

Ogoh-ogoh are giant figures of bamboo and papier-mâché that each banjar, the local neighbourhood group, spends weeks building. Parades start around 7 pm, with gongs, torches and a lot of noise; the idea is to scare evil spirits off the island before the silence. Roads close from about 4 pm, so walk to the nearest parade rather than drive.

Ubud and most south Bali towns have one. Ask at your hotel where the local banjar gathers.

A car and driver for 10 to 11 hours on your route. Use it on 6 or 9 March, not the eve.

How should you plan tours around Nyepi 2027?

Do the big day trips on Friday 5 or Saturday 6 March, or from Tuesday 9 March. Keep Sunday 7 March to a short morning out.

On the eve, businesses wind down from midday and the parade road closures start in the afternoon, so a 10-hour tour on 7 March will not end well. A morning trip works: Tegenungan opens at 6:30 am and is quietest before 9. From 9 March the sights reopen as normal, with the Monkey Forest from 9 am. Expect heavy domestic traffic from then through the Idulfitri holidays.

All tours on this site cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before, so you can book now and adjust later. A private driver for the day suits this week best: no fixed route, so you can fit Tegenungan, Ubud and an early return around the closures.

Can you fly in or out of Bali on Nyepi?

No. No flights land or take off for the 24 hours, so arrive by the morning of 7 March or after 9 March.

If you connect through Jakarta or Singapore, leave a buffer: miss the last flight on the eve and the next one to Bali goes on 9 March. If you land on 7 March, aim for the morning: roads to the hotels jam up from midday and close in the afternoon. Flying out on 9 March is fine, with departures picking up from mid-morning.
